We had an early start today. Leaving Las Cruces about 9am. Driving over the impressive organ mountains that stand between Las Cruces and the White Sands.
It's day one of Paul Cam. Today's topic - raffle ticket for a sentimental aeroplane ride. I catch it just at the story's peak!
Aunt Barbara rings to check what time we are arriving and also so she can open the gate for us... Paul thinking 'Forgetta Bout It'.
Before arriving we are treated to a visual entrèe. The ascent through the mountains is amazing. Trees climbing through the hills, supported by cream layered cliffs.
We arrived at the drive, open the gate and Aunt Barbara walks down her ramp alongside the house to greet us. In her red checkered shirt and jeans with arms open wide.
Her house is situated in the mountains in La Lus overlooking Alamogordo and the White Sands. It's beautiful, very peaceful and I can imagine how Aunt Barbara spends many hours out on her front porch.
We head over to an art exhibition where Mike has some of his wooden designs on display at his friend Johns house. John himself, has some fascinating photographic art including his own pictures of Johnny Cash. His camera collection is also something else!
The journey there has some stunning views, the mountains are covered in a sea of green trees with sand coloured rocks beneath. The Sierra Blanca mountain at 12,000 feet is something else. People come here in winter to ski. The journey takes us through the Mascalero Indian community and they have created some great artwork on the roadside. We past some interesting churches, specifically the Our Lady Guadeloupe Church. Which Nan and Grandad visited in 20 years ago.
We have lunch in Capitan at Smokey Bears restaurant - Double Smokey Bear burger. There is a crazy house/shop over the road with vibrant colours and a hippy look to it.
Then we head to Aunt Barbara's properties in the mountains in Capitan. One which Michael and his wife Barbara currently live in. The other next to it with leasers and four horses. Beautiful houses, one with 5 acres and the other 3.8. Situated in a most peaceful and disturbed location in the mountains.
We head back to Johns house where a group of musicians have gathered, playing jazz with guitars and a Harmonica.
Afterwards we head back to Aunt Barbaras and I present her with the Mug of her and her brothers. She is delighted!
