I cant believe I have been here for a week already! I have had quite an action packed week in a lazy kind of way. Following the canoeing trip at the beginning of the week I have also taken part in a variety of other activities.
On Tuesday, following a feast cooked up by Adam and Kevin we decided that we should have a game of midnight volleyball. Adam and Sylvia couldnt be bothered to walk to the beach to see whether the courts were lit so Amelie, Kevin and myself went to check it out. It wasn't lit exactly but we could sort of see the ball so we decided to play. 3 wasn't really enough so we collared various people as they walked past to join us. The people who joined us were in various stages of drunkeness (one guys contribution was to just sit under the net!) and so it wasn't that successful but it was fun anyway. Walking along the beach was gorgeous at night and we could see Mars really clearly glowing orange close to the horizon.
Wednesday I decided to visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (an animal hospital open to the public). As part of the experience I got to go out on a boat with a Marine Biologist. I sat next to a very friendly American couple, she told me that they used to have a big fish tank but sadly she had killed all of the fish when she had run out of fish food and decided to feed them dog food instead??!? Also, they dont like the president, just so you know. In the aquarium itself it was mainly turtles and dolphins (with a couple of nurse sharks and river otters), I fell in love with one particular turtle who's flippers hadn't developed properly. As a result it couldnt dive or get any real propulsion so it just bobbed about on top of the water while the other turtles swam below it, AAhh!
Later in the evening 6 of us (including the hostel owner, Rob) decided to go and play tennis. Whilst Rob and Carter seemed to be having quite a good game, our game had sort of descended in to more a game of fetch as we kept missing the balls. Amelie and Sylvia went to play table tennis (they thought it would involve less running about) so Kevin and I joined Carter and Rob for a game of tennis. I was on Rob's side and we won despite me!
Thursday I woke to the sound of constant dripping and when I looked at the clock realised it was 3:50am. In the end it was getting on my nerves so I had to get up and investigate. As soon as I got up, Maria heard me and all the lights went on, it turns out the roof was leaking quite badly. None of us were quite sure what to do so we just found something to catch the water with and mop the tiled floor which had become a death trap then we all went back to bed praying that the roof wouldn't cave in completely. Maria reads the bible everyday (not all of it obviously) so I figured if we were in a room with her we should be ok.
When it was actually time to get up Thursday Sylvia and I drove over to Marissa's house and we all went to Busch Gardens (a cross between a Safari Park and a Theme Park). On the way there Marissa pointed out the newest Coaster Sheikra. If you can imagine Oblivion Super Sized, thats Sheikra!! A 200ft near vertical drop, my heart was pounding and we hadn't got in the car park yet! When we eventually reached the Park entrance there was a sign saying that Sheikra was closed because they were taking the floor off it. Secretly I was happy as I hadn't brought a change of underwear with me! Had a really good day going on all the other Roller Coasters and got pretty close to some lovely animals including a baby gorilla and a baby Hippo.
On the way home Adam called Sylvia to see whether we were going to be home for the BBQ. We gave him an estimated ETA of 10:00pm and arrived as it was being dished up. Once again the food was great (can't believe my luck, Adam's a chef!). Portabello mushroom stuffed with crab and topped with cheese and tomatoe, pork chop, sausage, salad and of course King Prawn kebab!
Friday was a lazy day. Amelie, Kevin and I went to play table tennis and and pool at the rec centre and then spent the afternoon at the pool. At tea time I went for a walk along to the Pier where there was a group playing Bob Marley covers and local crafts were being sold, Lovely! When I got back Amelie and Adam attempted to teach us to play poker while Kevin made a pair of "glasses" out of a cooker lighter, mmm the smell of melting plastic! I was just getting the hang of Poker when we broke for Pizza. This was the first time I had been to the Service Station at the end of the road but Crispie Creme Donuts, Cookies and Pizza says it wont be the last.
That's been my week!
