Today I am reminded by diary to take my pills for the snails of lake Malawi that crawl into your feet, hopefully to stop me getting Bilhartsea or something.. I'm delaying this for another 2 weeks thanks to the advice if Dr Jo and Dr Eve.
Near the entrance to the park yesterday we spotted a croc centre, and after an investigation we found the free on Sundays. I thought this was worth a visit.
Very well laid out centre with plenty of crocs if all shapes and sizes. Snub nosed, Nile, narrow snouted, dalwf, and juveniles of all age too, even a couple of alligators! The mist impressive were the Nile crocodile, which are the ones four locally in Africa. At feeding time these two black workers hauled a crate of butcher zebra into the Nile enclosure right in front io a 4m female. She ran straight at them, ignoring the meat they were hastily throwing at her, at one point a lady screamed for their lives, I kept taking photos.... Eventually she grabbed a leg, zebra leg and went to work on it. Bang! Was the sound of her smashing the zebras leg in half, such powerful jaws. Then at the sound if the big SA chap next to me going YUUSSS, YUUUUUUSSS I saw the male! A whopping 6metres and weighing 600kg!! A real monster. They took some zebra over to him, didn't look like he was in a hurry to feed, but when he did he didn't need to snap any bones, one big GULP and it was gone!
Held a little Nile too, solid little thing.
I had forgotten both my shoes and my trousers to change into for a horse ride, so I went bare boot with shorts... Not far from the croc reserve was hannah's beach and safari horses. The western saddle was very uncomfortable compared to the one in Canada i last sat in! We got so close to the wildlife, not far until we saw warthog, then wilderbeast, impala, bushbuck and zebra. The trick is to let the horses eat the grass and then slowly inch closer and closer. We could get within a few metres of the zebra, was amazing. Hannah once was within the zebra heard, babies and all.
We headed to town after for a very late lunch, we had sushi at half price.
Nice quiet evening, watched a film and enjoyed last night in the house.
