On Thursday we left the lovely Redcastle Hotel and headed for Donegal town.
Six years ago we rented a home in County Donegal so we detoured back through the town of Rathmullan and drove out to take a look at this lovely home and also the area. We stopped at the Water's Edge restaurant on the outskirts of Rathmullan - a favorite restaurant when we stayed in the area.
We stayed at a Guest House for two nights just outside of Donegal Town with stunning views of the Bluestack mountains.. In Ireland a Guest House is between a B & B and a hotel in terms of services. Ard na Btreatha (www.ardnabreatha.com) has a lovely restaurant. It is located on a working farm and is family run.
On Friday morning, after a wonderful breakfast, we headed toward Killybegs and then on to Kilcar where we stopped to visit Studio Donegal. We observed hand weavers at work and bought a handwoven throw which we hope will match our living room in Louisville.
We drove by Slieve League the highest cliffs in Ireland and a countryside dotted with lots of sheep and then on to the town of Ardara. We asked for a pub with the best Irish Coffee and were directed to Nancy's Pub. The Irish coffee was, indeed, the best so far on this trip. We asked to meet Nancy - turns out she's been gone since about 1920!
