San Francisco -The duck tour!
We have travelled around cities by boat, bus, train, trolley, cable car and foot, but never by duck. You may think that we were quackers but when the opportunity arose in San Francisco we dived in with both feet. We set off one bright sunny morning- well actually it was wet and cloudy-perfect weather for ducks. You may think that you know what a duck is, but in fact it is an amphibious vehicle that in a former life helped to beat the living daylights out of those beasty Germans who were occupying Europe at the time.
Before we set off we made sure that our equipment was in fine order-on the count of 3 we all blew into our vivid yellow duck whistles.Once we all knew how to blow it properly we set off- this took longer for some of us as we could not undo the the plastic wallet that housed it.
We splashed our way through the city, terrifying the locals with the appearance and with our raucous, high pitched whistling. Eventually we reached the harbour and dived in. It is amazing what a duck can do in water. We headed for the nearest boat which happened to be an Hawaiian oil tanker to the sound of Hawaii-5-0, waving and squawking at the crew as we flew- moments later the crew were doubled up with laughter or maybe it was indigestion. Then the driver asked if any one would like to have a go at manouvering the boat- many tried but the best was saved for last- can you guess who volunteered?- well it was not Brian and by this time Bertie's fur had taken on several shades of green. Our noble Scots companion took the helm and guided us serenely across the, by now, empty San Francisco harbour. She felt so confident that she had time to pose for photographs. {Why do ducks suddenly decide to travel around in circles?} Try as he might the coxswain {that is what we call the head duck} found it difficult to regain the wheel- only a promise of a hearty meal in Boudins and bottle of the finest Sauvignon Blanc did the trick. We returned quickly to dry land- the duck flew across the water when in the right hands. We returned to dry dock to the sound of Abbott and Costello discussing baseball-it seemed the right thing to do at the time.
S.F has surprised us with its diversity and colour. It will stay in our memories. Until Vancouver, LOVE AND PEACE.
