You will not believe the effort that we have made to write these journal entries. The computers are based in the business centre on the 5th floor of the adjacent building. We need to use a swipe card in the elevator to gain access to this floor. Brian has spent many happy hours on the first floor watching the elevator doors opening and closing without any discernable vertical movement. Sandy has done rather better- she can reach the correct floor, but the doors to the elevator do not usually open so she often returns to the lobby to start again.
Anyway, back to San Francisco. Union Square is packed with swanky New York stores like Macy's, Bloomingdales, Tiffany's......In the centre of the square is one fabulous Christmas Tree.Macy's houses the Cheese Cake Factory which has divine food in large quantities- the waiter said that we were the only ones to eat everything{true Brits!}Everyone else had their white boxes to take food home. The food proved sufficient distraction to stop Sandy buying anything. The Christmas decorations in Macy's are wonderful and make British goods look cheap and nasty.
We spent the day in the wine country of Napa and Sonoma. We visited 3 vineyards - we learnt a lot and intended to come back as experts, but as the day progressed our knowledge became less secure. The trip was a great way of seeing the beautiful countryside outside the city.We stopped at Sonoma for lunch. The place has quite a history- being owned by the Spanish who gave it its name and the Mexicans before it became part of U.S.A. The town is a beautifully laid back place in true Califorian style- we fell in love with it and want to live there when we are not in Maine,Anna Marie,Boston....!
During our last date in S.F we revisited our youth -hey man! Haight-Ashbury flower power is what I mean{see Sandy's tee shirt} The main street was in a time warp-our time warp! Some of the people walking around had to be seen to be believed{no not us! we looked out of place} This was to be the highlight of Sandy's S.F visit and she was not disappointed. Love and Peace was still alive. There were plenty of places to smoke,if you know what I mean. The undercover police in Golden Gate Park were dressed as hippies-how cool is that! We watched them for half an hour surrepticiously speaking into walkie-talkies before seeing them make an arrest. It was the most hysterical thing out and added to Sandy's delight.
