We are in San Francisco and have flowers in our hair!
Mark Twain said " the coldest winter that I have ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." San Francisco definitely has its own identity which is very different to what we seen so far- it is a cultural, zany and humorous place. There are street artists and beggars everywhere. We had an amazing trip to Alcatraz and you really get the feeling of what it would have been like to be a prisoner there { see Bertie's eyewitness account]
Great eating places and superb Ghirandelli chocolate ( we have stocked up for Canada). They have many bakeries including Boudins which was set up by Italian immigrants during the Gold Rush of 1846.We toured the premises seeing how they make their famous sour bread -it comes in all shapes and sizes. We are staying at the Holiday Inn but we have been having great buffet breakfasts at the Marriott ,which normally consists of:- 7 cups of coffee,4 freshly squeezed orange juices, about 3lbs of fresh fruit salad, 6 rashers of bacon,3 eggs,2 sausages, 2 croissants, fresh French toast fruit dish and some toast {between us, not each!)- each day we eat more and get charged less- if we stay any longer they will be paying us to come{NEWS FLASH-today we got the whole meal free and 2 coffees to take away!!!} They have either taken a shine to us or they are keeping us happy until the men in white coats arrive.
We have been getting around on the famous cable cars. They are driven by men with huge personalities- we risk it for the comedy. You literally hang out of the side as you roller coaster the steep hills - not for the faint hearted. The car stops at the middle of busy intersections to let you off- the traffic is supposed to stop- an incredible experience. The famous Golden Gate Bridge is everything that it is cracked up to be,especially at sun set - Brian took 3 days to realise that he was getting excited about the wrong bridge!
