It's big, really big. Properly big.
Each day with Ercio we covered 400 to 500 kilometres in 10 or so hours of moving through the landscape, and that's just Region VII of Chile - Chico Norte, the little North.
It's astonishingly beautiful with varied landscapes that we quickly adapted to and stopped bring amazed by. It's richer and more European than Peru and Bolivia. It has infrastructure and pride and much less litter.
The observatory tour was worth the effort for the views alone, the horse riding was a highlight, for me at least, and I learned at least some the lessons of previous extended trips by having a rest period of a few days in the same place before heading home - a journey that took from Sunday 11am to the same time the following today.
Would I revisit Chile? Yes, but only as part of another South American adventure and in combination with Argentina. Patagonia, glaciers and the southern reaches of Chile have an undeniable pull.
Would Alfie, Jude and Sarah jump for joy if I said Chile in two or three years' time as part of our next big trip? You'll have to ask them, but I know an Italian villa with a pool is the red hot favourite for summer 2017. Perhaps what we need is for the patina to build and the pain of illnesses to around this trip before I mention South America again.
Now Central America is a whole different kettle of fish ...
Until next time!
