Passing along the main road from airport to Hostal there is a notable change from Peru/Lima.
The roads are wider and better maintained, buildings are more modern, rise higher and housing is far less ramshackle, cars and taxis are less dented and polluting, public transport infrastructure exists in the form of bendy-buses and a metro system - all in all there is a noticeable European feel to this capital.
Our accommodation is a Hostal not a hotel, and none the worse for that. Jude is weary after our overnight bus and the airport dash, so we hunker down for a couple of hours after his first submarino; hot milk with chocolate pieces in the bottom of the mug which you stir to achieve the chocolatey-ness you desire. In Jude's case it's full chocolate, full stir, and wait for suitable cooling to occur.
After a modicum of research we venture out into Santiago to orient ourselves and, with a particular locale in mind, eat.
Along the way we see the first dogs on leads since leaving the uk - a sure sign of affluence!
This turns our thoughts to Ursa and her holiday in the country with Lou if Johnny Whiskers' fame. The spectacular wifi warrants a Facebook frenzy and we are all reassured that Ursa isn't pining and is probably enjoying herself at Boot Camp nearly as much as we are.
