Jude isn't feeling great so skips breakfast.
However, the hostal's breakfast is a number of leagues above our recent Peruvian fare and we are joined at the communal tables by an Aussie and an American. We soon fall into conversation over homemade yogurt, fresh fruit, soft rolls, cheese, variegated jams and refills of percolated coffee without a single egg in sight!
We head out into Santiago and at the first plaza find a substantial volume of students protesting the cost of education. Flags abound. Feminist flags, Anarchist black flags and the University of Santiago Chemistry Department, too, have their flag out!
The demonstration appears good natured (at least at present) although there are some serious looking armed police close at hand, as well as rooftop observers and a drone monitoring the situation, so we head off to the central fish market where there seem to be at least as many restaurants as stalls, and thence the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Jude's stomach isn't what it should be so he and Sarah return to the hostal while Alfie and I climb the Japanese Gardens and scope the Plaza de Armas. This is a monster plaza (as it should be), with several street performers lending it a Covent Garden vibe. There is the required Cathedral, some light retail opportunity, at least one museum and a number of very substantial palm trees, a couple of which have become unstable and are buttressed, presumably to prevent their toppling over.
