Hello!
I have just loaded not one, but TWO, shiny new photo albums for you to enjoy. Both depict my adventures in Japan in January.
I am also back in Bangkok after a two month jaunt through northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Each place was utterly brilliant. I climbed a mountain in Vietnam, swam in waterfalls in Cambodia and celebrated new year Laos style! If you ever think of visiting Asia I can highly recommend the South East. The scenery is amazing, people are great and there's always something to see or do.
In the last couple of weeks I travelled through Cambodia. I first visited the North East which is a bit off the beaten track and more exciting for it. There were some nice national parks, waterfalls and volcanic lakes to swim in. It felt very genuine to be in a place that few tourists get to (largely because it is tough to get to - the roads are no more than dirt tracks).
I also visited Angkor Wat which is one of the most spectacular temple complex anywhere in the world. The ruins are in the Cambodian jungle and it does feel like you are walking through a long-lost civilization. Interestingly, one of the temples was used in one of the Tomb Raider films (not sure which one though...).
After Angkor I went to Phnom Penh which is a fantastic lively city. The nightlife was great - managed to get into the Foreign Correspondents Club! This was the place where many journalists took refuge when the Khmer Rouge evacuated the city in 1975.
My main reason for visiting Phnom Penh was to learn more of the genocide that took place between 1975 and 1979. I went to one of the main prisons and also the Killing Fields. These visits were far more shocking and intense than I thought they would be. At the Killing Fields themselves a monument has been built using human skulls that were found there. There was also clothing and other bits of human bone scattered across the fields. It was an extremely sad place but something that was worth seeing. It was impressive to see how well the Cambodian people had recovered in such a short amount of time.
Anyway, tomorrow I go to Ko Phi Phi. People tell me it is very beautiful so I will probably chill there for a week or so. I then fly to Australia on the 17th May.
Hope alls good - take care
