So i'm in the ledgendary Byron Bay!
I havent been to the lighthouse yet but i plan to go tomorrow, it is the most easterly point in Australia and if you go there for sunrise you will be the first person in Oz to see the sun! You'd also be insane to want to get up at 5am we all know i wont be doing that dont we.
I had a lovely time in Port Macquarie was a nice little quiet town and it was quite nice just to chill after the hustle and bustle of Sydney. They have a beautiful walk along the beach and the edge is lined with big rocks that are painted by all the locals. I really wanted to paint one saying 'The Nat Adventure!' but i didnt have the time money or patients (they were big rocks!) I also did a bit of sunbathing on the beach and pathetically waded out and then back into sea as it was a little chilly that day. And i went to the Koala hospital which was soooo cute! They had a 3 legged Koala, a blind Koala, the oldest Koala in Oz! Definately a high light there. I also happened to find the best ice cream parlour!!! The most amazing flavours of ice cream i think i may ever have had. I tried serverl in my 2 days there... Candy floss, Piece of cake (loads of different types of cake) Cookie dough and chocolate chip, white chocolate. Wonderful little place it was would have been nice to spend a few more days there just wish id have had time.
It was then on to Coffs Harbour again another little quiet town but was nice to chill a bit. And to be fair because im only spending a few days in each place i barely get the chance to chill is so tiring moving and travelling all the time! I attempted to jump off the famous pier at Coffs Harbour. I went with a few other people from the hostel. 2 of the guys did it, the other girl couldnt because of she'd broken her back the last time she jumped off a pier (great thing to hear when your about to do it, really inspires confidence!) it was then down to me. There i was stood on the edge of the pier in the freezing cold and the spitting rain (yes i know its sunny in England and its raining here shut up!) there was no one at the pier except us and a 14 year old boy who was taking the piss out of my because he would jump off the highest part and i wouldnt. So to cut it short i stood there for about 20 minutes made everyone count me in 1,2,3 about 10 times and then promptly chickened out and jumped off the little pier instead. The next day i went to the pier just before my bus and it was a beautiful day and there were tons of kids jumping off ranging from 8-15. My god did i feel like a pansy!
Also went canoeing with some other English girls down an esterie past the botanical gardens. Was a good laugh even if we did take it rather slow and tended to just let the tide carry us. We managed not to fall in and thats an achievement! Also went to a rather nice bbq at the hostel i stayed at Ausitel again would recommend the hostel nice and clean and good atmosphere. I have been lucky with hostels so far i just hope it stays that way.
Then i went on to Byron (it really is a fly by trip i so wish i had more time to spend a few extra days in some places because not only would i see more but when your moving all the time you get so tired and so dont see as much) I arrived in Byron at 10pm and couldnt find my shuttle bus to my hostel which was a bit of a trek away...joy! Luckily i did find an irish guy who was staying in the same place and so we shared a cab which cut costs. He also helped me with my bags...its seems im accumlating more and more things even though i am leaving things at most hostels. My bag is so heavy and now the wheels are broken i have to put it on my back and apparently i look mighty pathetic carrying it around because everyone offers to help me, which is nice in a way. But how do they manage and i dont?
I stayed that night at the Arts Factory. I read that it was a must do of Byron Bay and it truely is! Its a mega cool place. I checked in when i got there and got told i was staying in a 10 people teepee! This wasnt just any teepee it was the equivilent of a circus tent and had the best bed i've probably slept in so far. No bunk beds woop woop! Its a real hippy place with hammocks and lots of strange cigerrettes and tie dyed people. Definately worth a look in. I even got to do a free poi lesson in the morning from a man coated head to toe in tie dye...it was fetching.
I moved hostels after that just because its cheaper though this one is a trek away from town probably even more so then the arts factory but o well its comfy at least. I felt rather home sick last night which was not so nice :( but then whilst i was walking to town at 8pm as i realised i had run out of pasta (ive now been living off of pasta for a week and i suspect this will continue until i get home...please no pasta when i get home mum! its cheap and easy) a guy who works and lives at the hostel, James pulled up in his car and offered me a lift to town as it was quite far ( i know stranger danger but i'd seen him working there) he is such a nice guy! He took me to town to do my shopping then took me back so i could put it in the fridge then took me and some other people from the hostel to a bar geniunely nice guy. Does go on a bit about his philosophies but it was all good cos the italien guy who joined us loved it so i didnt really have to pay to much attention.
Today i went to Nimbin, anyone thats been to Byron im sure has been there or has at least heard of it. Its a town about an hour away from Byron and it truely is stuck in the 60's. All the buildings are painted up all physcodelic and all the shops sell retro things. Also although it is still illegal to do drugs in the town it seems to just be words not practice. People literally smoke weed next to the police station! Literally every local from teen to elderly offers you some wacky backy even the shop keepers!! Dont worrie mum i was a good girl honest i had a bus to catch and all but it was seriously hilarious! There were 70 year old stoned women serveing me in shops! Also next week there will be the mardi gras there it happens every year and it when the people march through the streets to say that cannabis should be made legal and they take it very seriously! They had charity boxes of every shop counter to help their 'cause' posters etc etc a lot of preperation is going into it. I also went to the candle factory which they have there which was cool cos i got to see them being made. I only spent a few hours there but honestly thats all you need i think unless you are there for the grass.
I was meant to go and meet Lara a dutch friend i have made who is travelling the same way as me tonight but its pouring with rain and its a 30 min walk to town so i have bailed and shall meet her tomorrow morning instead for some breakie. Happy days.
Shall spend tomorrow on the beachs and seeing the light house then off to Surfers Paradise!
I think its nearly time for some 14,000ft free falling dont you??
