Hey all
Since Caye Caulker we have done alot and had some very weird days!! We left Caye Caulker, unfortunately (I was growing quite attached to the Caye) and headed for Belmopan, where we were to go to the Blue Hole National Park (which contains another Cenote). Catching the bus to Belmopan was easy, after which we caught a connecting bus to Dangriga, from which we jumped off after about 15km at the entrance to the Cenote. It was hot!! We paid the entrance fee and traipsed down to the cenote which when we arrived was stunning. A blue ring of ice cold water, encased in jungle!! What more can you want eh? We dived in and the water truly was ice cold, which was one of the most refreshing things ever. Whilst at the cenote we got talking to some of the locals who were incredibly kind and helpful, spotted some cool birds (including hummingbirds) and continued to swim. After a lovely dip in the water we headed back up to the road to catch the bus to Dangriga, where we were to spend the night, before shooting off to c*** comb Nature Reserve the next day. The next day was a sad morning as Fran was leaving us to head quickly down to Guatemala City Airport to catch a flight to Santiago. We said our goodbyes and wished her luck before catching our own bus to the Maya Centre, where we needed to catch a taxi into c*** comb Basin. Upon arrival we realised we needed to buy some provisions to have in there as there were none on sale in there, sooo visiting a maya shop (which was the worst place ever "do you have bread..... No, Water??? No". So 10 mins later we departed the shop with a packet of noodles, a can of veg and a can of chicken sausages!!! Great. The taxi ride in lasted around 30 mins and again the temperature was bloody hot, and only got hotter and more humid as we made our way further and further into the jungle. That afternoon we went on a few walks around the jungle, armed to the teeth with machetes in case of a jaguar attack, to a few different waterfalls, and my god I have never been so hot and so sweaty in my life. Belize is an amazing country but it's just too hot!! The waterfalls however were stunning and again encased in jungle and completely natural. That evening we spent talking to one of the pikeyest northern blokes ever who was telling us how he had been robbed in almost every city he had been in!! Very funny, we dont understand how he managed it. We cooked our noodles veg and sausages which was alright, nothing exciting. That night was tough as there was no air flow and no fan so we lay in bed just sweating it out!! The next morning, rising early (at 5.30) we went out, once again armed to the teeth on another jungle hike to see some wildlife which unfortunately didn't show. However the walk was a lot more comfortable in the morning heat.
That afternoon we shot down to Placencia which is a small spit protruding into the sea on the east coast of Belize. It was nice, and was refreshing to be by the sea with the breeze after the stuffy sweatbox that was c*** comb Basin, That is what we first thought. After a nice day by the beach and a meal cooked by a hot Chinese lady who Simon and I fell in love with we went back to our room to have a good sleep. The room was worse than that in c*** comb Basin, there was no air and it was probably double the heat. Horrific, the night was spent lying still trying to cool down. Simon groaned half way through the night "I HAVE NEVER DEHYDRATED WHILST LYING STILL, THIS IS HORRIFIC". Was very funny and very very true.
The next day after an awful night's sleep and reserving that The Travellers Inn in Placencia is the worst place we have stayed so far, we chilled on the beach for the morning before shooting off to Punta Gorda (our gateway to Honduras). We stayed in a little place called Natures Way Guest House, and whilst there who should we meet but Sweaty Dave. I have played football with him in Southampton before and knew him vaguely so it was very strange meeting him so far away from home. He was also travelling to Honduras the next day, so he joined us on our trip across the border wich was very easy, no troubles. We are currently in Tela and planning on heading to La Cieba and the Bay Islands in the next few days!!
Adios
Simon and Howard
