Hello all
What a gwan?
After a long journey from Tikal we finally reached Belize. The bus across Belize was comfortable (being an old british colony there are unspoken rules on buses that if you dont have a seat then you stand, rather than sit on someone else). This made the bus journey a lot more pleasant and the reggae music in the background topped it off!!
Reaching Belize city around 3 hours later we headed for the water taxi over to Caye Caulker, our home for the next week or so. Checking in our bags onto the water taxi we boarded and sat on a very nice boat ride for around half an hour across the Caribbean coast for around 30 mins or so. Upon reaching the other side our bags were dumped on the jetty and guess what..... my bag wasnt there!! I wasnt too worried as it could only have been in one of a few places, but the laid back Belizian attitude (although absolutely amazing when you feel laid back) started to get a little annoying. The man kept saying "itl be arrrrrright man". haha. Anyways my bag eventually arrived around 2 hours later, so grabbing it quickly before anything else happened I proceeded to the next place of residence, Lorraines Guest houses.
That day we had a scout around some diving shops, where we found a suitable Scuba Diving PADI course costing around 275 USD. We started that day by watching a shed load of boring videos!! The next day however in the afternoon we got into the water. The first breath underwater was absolutely incredible and opened up innumerable possibilities. We had to run through loads of drills like taking masks off, removing breathing apparatus. Was very good fun. On the final day of the PADI we went diving on two different dive sites, one called Esmarelda and another called The North Cut. On the first dive this was the first time we had been down to 18m, which was almost double what we had been down to previously, so a little daunting at first but when you are down there its exactly the same. On that dive we becane surrounded by around 15 nurse sharks which were amazing. They were very docile and rubbed up to you like cats, wanting a stroke. You could pick them up and turn them over and rub their stomachs, which was incredible. There was also a humungous Moray Eel which liked playing a game of chicken with the divers amd swimming up very close to them. He was at least 2m long and incredibly built, and he swam right up to our dive instructor Israel Morans mask and tried to stare him out.
On the second dive at the North Cut we descended down, and almost immediately saw a loggerhead turtle just swimming around. It must have been about 2m long, but was incredibly cool swimming around with it. Later on the the dive we saw a huge nurse shark, must have been around 3m long, which didnt take any interest in us.
That evening we all took our PADI tests and passed so we are all PADI certified divers now which is awesome, and we are looking forward to heading down to Utila in Honduras for another bout of diving. That evening was spent celebrating with a bottle of rum, was a very messy night, with some top quality memories!!
Anyways as the Belizians would say
Cya Laterrr maaannn
