Wigton Moor Girls
Hi Guys Had quite a few technical issues - hoping got it sussed now tho. Don't know how much the Girls have been in touch with home.
Hired air conditioned minibus to ferry us around for the week. Arrived 02.30 at Hibernia Residences and Hostel. Never great arriving at that sort of time. Sleeping arrangements not ideal on first night, but now sorted.
Girls got to bed 04.00. Imagine surprise of Gill and I when a deputation knocked at our door at 07.00 "can we walk down to the seafront?". Gill and I walked to supermarket for provisions - not keen to carry that much bottled water in one go again! Second wave of girls then ready for sortie. We all had a very pleasant lunch at harbour front pizzeria - only Niomi asked for doggy bag/box. A quiet afternoon in the rooms and 18.30 minibus pick up to town of Kirkop near airport.
Weather was hot, but at least pitch in shade. Took photo of Girls wearing our new Malta kit. May have to redo as our kit supplier requested one for their new catalogue - and didn't notice Ellie S and Niomi trying to look hench with sleeves rolled up.
First game was against a very good Pembroke Athelta. They are the U16 Malta champions. Pembroke showed very good technique in many areas - especially in centre midfield where they had very gifted players. The Maltese created 3 very good chances - the first 2 being well saved by Kelsey and Ellie S and the third a free kick that flew narrowly wide. Wigton defended well and showed good variety going forward. Niomi opened the scoring and Kelsey finished well afor a second after Roisin slid a slide rule pass to Olivia for a trademark pull back. An excellent performance against a team we play again in Tuesday.
After a rest , the Girls played against hosts Kirkop United. Kirkop have a thriving Girls football nursery that is showing dividends. Wigtons passing was off a little bit in the first few minutes. However, this picked up and Niomi scored 2 more goals (and earn a healthy scoring bonus from Brian) while Ellie S got the third goal after clever work by Kelsey. Many thanks to Kirkop for their great hospitality.
Ellie S, Katie and Shauna - as well as being fantastic footballers - have gelled brilliantly with the group (although we are missing Lou, Laura,Juliana and Roisin G .
Really impressed with what we have seen of the island and how friendly the people are - especially toward the British.Sliema a lovely town - full of character. It's over 100 F today - Girls based around a pool. will add some photos soon. Just about out of battery and also ready for my lunch.
