Cumulative miles driven: 3,078
The drive from San Antonio in Texas to Roswell, New Mexico was 590 miles of which the first 312 miles were on Interstate 10 (or I-10). Leaving San Antonio on five and six lane highways this gave way to a fairly standard dual carriageway road after around 15 miles of urbanisation, so with the sat nav showing 'next turn' off I-10 in over 290 miles it was time to employ cruise control set at 80mph with the exception of stops for coffee and fuel. Western Texas is not a thrilling landscape as it changes from scrub land to desert land, especially as some of this is oil country and you can actually smell it before you get there!
Our lunch stop in Pecos, Texas ,certainly made you appreciate the UK. The place was clearly a small town that became part of the Texan oil boom but the town itself has lost out. The McDonald's, Subway, Denny's and other fast food joints seemed to be the places to eat. It did however seem that our Subway sandwiches had more fresh veggies on board than were sold in the nearby Walmart - we were genuinely shocked by the racks of processed food on sale but absolutely no real fresh food being available.
Having crossed into New Mexico after over 400 miles of driving we changed time zones to GMT-7 (Mountain Standard Time) and paid a visit to Carlsbad Cavern. The cavern, which is said to be the biggest in the western hemisphere, was very impressive and the path of nearly one and a half miles took us around 45 minutes to complete after we had dropped the 750ft in a lift to the cave system from the visitor centre. Photographs don't really do it justice so apologies. It was then about a 100 mile or two hour journey to Roswell in New Mexico.
Roswell is most famous, or probably only famous, for the alleged crash of a UFO close by in 1947. We visited the UFO museum which was a little disappointing and did not see any little green, grey or brown men with our own eyes. We did however see what may have been two UFOs hovering close to our hotel shortly before we went to the local cinema to see the Imitation Game starring Benedict Cummerbatch. What a good film, probably the highlight of the stay in Roswell!

Julie Beck-Richards OK then, are you sure Nick Frost and Simon Pegg weren't lurking in the background - looks awfully familiar to the promo shots for Paul. Now there's a name to play with! They are quite cute though.
Sweeney Todd I recognise the "Ghouls", friends of yours ? All this food are you putting weight on.
Andy Holt There were not many Brits in town and certainly did not see any actor types in a camper van . . . they really could have made more of the museum in my opinion.
Andy Holt The Roswell incident is a strange one, would the alien creatures really just happen to look a little like us. Something certainly happened out there but not sure what so no new friends coming home with us! As for food and weight, will have to see when we get back . . . have tried to limit our intake and do plenty of walking which is quite the opposite of most people in the USA given the sometime difficult nature of actually walking to get somewhere!
