Cumulative miles driven: 2,472
Having driven from Fort Worth via Austin, the state capital of Texas, the car has stayed parked up for two days in San Antonio as this is a walkable city. We have enjoyed a fair amount of walking, eating and drinking over the past couple days and very nice it has been!
San Antonio is most famous for The Alamo and The River Walk. The latter of these shows that if you have an attractive downtown area with plenty of safe walking then people will flock to it and enjoy it. This is something that cities across the USA should embrace as when you look at similar places across the world it is clear that people do enjoy this type of atmosphere. Dining riverside in San Antonio, whilst more expensive than the out of town diners or chain steakhouse offerings that are two a dollar over here, really was most pleasant. It was actually well worth it and it would also be better if our cousins from across the pond could appreciate that you do not always want to sit down, have one drink, eat your food and be paid up and gone within thirty minutes. Sometimes just being there, taking your time and enjoying the atmosphere is all part of the experience. It was however good fun trying to slow them down!
The Alamo, of which only a small part remains, really was worth a visit. If you wanted you can enter without paying a dime. We chose however to pay $7.00 for an audio guide which too be honest added some background but probably not a whole lot more than the free information boards and introduction film.
So San Antonio really is a city of walking, eating and drinking. It is somewhere that you could easily spend three or four days or even a week if you want to drive out visiting the historic Spanish Missions or maybe have a day at Sea World or the Six Flags theme park in the spring or summer months. The city is on our 'return to' list and if you are ever in this part of Texas then it really should be on your 'must visit' list.
After the past few days headed pretty much due south we now start heading west again as we journey to New Mexico and search for alien life forms in Roswell. This will not only be a 550 mile drive but it should also should see us crossing the halfway point of this trans-continental road trip!

Sweeney todd. I like the face on the Cathedral. Salad looks good, I don't like cucumber.
