Holtyboy's Travel Blog
Namibia is huge and when putting together a trip there has to be a balance between distance to travel and sights that need to be seen. We originally thought we could possibly be able to make it from Etosha to the coast in one day if we stuck to main roads - in the end we need two nights accommodation in order to make it to Swakopmund and take in a few of the sights en-route. Our first stop was at Outjo, about 120km from Okakuejo in Etosha and this gave us the chance to visit a German institution since 1947, the Outjo Bakery. Nice coffee, a range of cakes and some mighty fine savouries were the order of the day. We also visited the small museum in town, there was not too much to see but for the 50p entry fee it was pretty good. We then headed to Vingerklip Lodge, named after the finger of rock close to the hotel, and what a great place it was! Spectacular views across the valley and as we had reserved in advance we were able to dine at their Eagle's Nest restaurant perched on top of the cliff overlooking the Vingerklip. The food, which was a barbeque, featured Kudu, Pork, Lamb and Springbok with lots of rice, pasta and vegetables available too. It was a great place to spend the late afternoon and evening - we really should have stayed for two nights. Even though our drive from Vingerklip to Uis, our next stop, was only 325km, we also knew that most of it would be on unsealed gravel roads so the going might be slow at times. The first stop was to visit the Petrified Forest west of Khorixas - having seen the same type of thing in Arizona the Namibian version was not as impressive, although the guide was enthusiastic and loved to watch English football . . . . . something neither Heather or I have any clue about! After another couple of hours of jaw rattling, bone shaking driving we arrived at Twyfelfontain a UNESCO Heritage Site that contains a number of ancient rock engraving from up to 6,000 years ago. The 45 minute walking tour was not for those unsteady on their feet with plenty on clambering over the rocks to see the historic engravings in 30°c heat. So that left us another three hours or so of gravel road driving to get to our stop in Uis. It was nice to get there around nine hours after leaving Vingerklip . . . . it really is a good job we didn't try to do this all in one day.
