Having a trip on the Bernina Express to Tirano (just over the Italian border) was one of the 'must do' items in our list for the Graubünden area of Switzerland. What a great day out it was. Leaving Davos Platz at 0929 we travelled to Filisur in order the catch the Bernina Express departing at 1002. During the winter period (of which we were still in according to the Rhätische Bahn/RhB) the panorama coaches are added to the normal service train across the Bernina Pass to Tirano rather than running as an individual train as they do in the summer months. The journey was stunning and the three hours from Filisur to Tirano soon passed as the train zig-zagged, spiralled, climbed and dived it's way to Italy. Plenty of photographs were snapped en-route. With a two hour break in Tirano there was time to do all things Italian; have some gelato, try the local bruschetta, enjoy some Parma ham, a local beer, a glass or two wine as well as an espresso coffee. There was also just enough time to see the historical centre of Tirano! With the train back due to depart at 1500 from the RhB station in Tirano (which is adjacent to, but separate from, the FS Italian Railways station with trains to Lake Como and Milan) it was soon time to re-trace our steps to Filisur in Switzerland. Despite not wanting to take photos on the way back it was hard to resist taking a few extra snaps! With an easy four minute connection we were soon headed to Davos Platz from Filisur seeing us back at our base at 1830. What a great nine hour long day out it was!
