Hello again.
Two blogs in two minutes, and the photo is of Monaco if you're interested lol.
First, theres the fiasco of yesterday, essentially an 11 hour wait in Doboj train station. My logic went like this-presumably, if the only way to get from Sarajevo to Belgrade by train is to change at Doboj it must be a fairly large place, and a fairly large station, with, for example, luggage lockers. So I won't have to sit on the platform for 11 hours because I can't carry my pack around all day.
Error. No left luggage, no real town at all, just large platforms and a tiny little concrete hut. God knows why you have to change there to get to Belgrade. Presumably they hope that it will help boost tourism in the town if they make people stop 11 hours. Newsflash-I'm not carrying around a heavy backpack in 40 degree heat all day.
Rant over, the long and the short of it is that I spent all afternoon sat on a Bosnian platform which was obviously in the Serbian part of Bosnia, as they used Cyrillic alphabet and didn't speak a word of english. One of the most frustrating days travelling ever. Eventually got to Belgrade at 6am this morning having been woken up regularly by border patrols and ticket inspectors. b******s.
Right so, checked into the hostel-nice hostel by the way, a mere 30 seconds from the train station-but couldn't sleep of course because no one had checked out yet. So I went into the town to look round.
Belgrade is surprisingly nice-the fortress is very nice and huge (and free)- and the general city is not the Soviet nightmare I was expecting. The artists quarter claims to be the equal of Montmartre-I wouldn't quite go that far but it's certainly nice with lots of restaurants (one of the nicer of which i splashed out on lunch being tired and stressed out) and wandering round the city is a pleasant experience. However, by 1 it was roasting again so I headed back to the hostel, where I have remained, popping pills to try and ward off my headache and temperature which are beginning to be a real pain in the ass.
Anywho, Belgrade seemed nice even through my pissed off-tinted spectacles, so it must be pretty good. Night life is meant to be fab as well, but I'm ill and leaving tomorrow,
