Hello!
See, the photo is the same as the one for sarajevo but this time its actually of the place i went-that bridge over the river was blown up in the war, but they reconstructed it. It's 30m high and people jump off it. lunatics.
So anyway. Mostar is such a cool place. It's got this lovely little old town that you could probably wander round for days and keep seeing new things, and the bridge is gorgeous, a perfect arch across the river. Mostar was really badly firebombed in the war-nearly every single person living there was evacuated and theres still massive evidence of it-you may get buildings which are a bit blasted in sarajevo but here theres buildings with maybe one or two walls left, or occasionally the whole frontage has been blown off and you can see into the rooms which are now just bare stone shells. Quite a sobering experience.
But it all adds to the general feeling that mostar is a fantastic place. Its beautiful, 45 degrees in the middle of the day but it doesn't matter because theres the river which is maybe 10 degrees and is easily deep enough to jump into from great heights (if so inclined-needless to say I jumped in from reasonably high but chickened out on the 30m drop...).
The second day spent in Mostar we went on a sort of tour of the surrounding countryside with a guy from the hostel, who was an absolute legend and extremely interesting on the subject of the war and subsequent divisions in Bosnia-although he doesn't seem to be too optimistic about the long term future.
The hostel was fab-comfy with a kitchen and reasonably cheap, always good, and supplied an entire day trip for 15 euros which is, frankly, a bargain. Possibly the friendliest hostel ever as well-anywhere that gives me a free beer when I arrive gets my vote! Or anyone who buys me an ice cream on the way home in the van because it's hot enough to roast a large cow in about 5 minutes.
To be added to the "good times" list was meeting three cambridge boys and girl, with whom laughs were had, and oxbridge banter was traded. All in all, a very successful stop on the list and maybe my best place so far.
Much love,
HM
