So, last night's result meant that on my last day in Madrid I was free to explore more. Having been sitting for most of the last 4 days, I wanted to stretch my legs. However, I didn't fancy the hustle and bustle of the city at the weekend. I'd previously spotted that there is a huge green area to the west of the city, so decided to explore that.
It having been a late one last night, getting back to my flat about 1am, which seemed to be the time the local youth were setting out for the night! But I'm neither a local or a youth!
Anyway, it having been a late one last night, I set out a little after midday to Lago station, on the edge of the Parque Historico Casa de Campo.
The name translates as Country House and is a reference to it having been a royal hunting estate. The park covers a massive 4,275 acres. I didn't walk anywhere near all of them, but a fair few as I spent about 4 hours on a meandering route between Lago and Casa de Campo Metro stations.
Near Lago station is Lago Casa de Campo, a large lake, with stunning views of the city, including the Real Basilica, Catedral del la Almudena and Palacio Real.
As I walked further into the park I spotted a rollercoaster and other rides against the skyline. These occupy a part of the park near Batan. However, I was after solitude today so I turned away from the rides.
There are many historical features in the park, and I stopped by Bunker de la Guerra Civil Espanola, which is a hill from which there are more views of the city.
From there I headed north and uphill to Mirador del Teleferico, which is a cable car station, though I'm not sure where the other end is. From here not only were there views of the city to the east, but also the mountains to the west.
I continued to explore the park and found myself further cut off from the world, until I decided it was time to head to the metro station - which I discovered was an hour's walk away. By the time I got to the Metro, I was so pleased to see it!
I then got the Metro to Callao and went to Steak Burger where I had a sumptuous tenderloin, which I reckon I thoroughly deserved!
Then it was time to head back to the flat and pack for the morning, when I'll be flying back to Gatwick.
My first trip to Madrid has been thoroughly enjoyable. The city is beautiful, the people friendly and the food delicious. The tennis was highly entertaining and enjoyable - even last night! I look forward to coming back again same time next year.
