Saturday 8th August - yesterday we went for a drive around the mountain and saw the village from a different side, through farming country and along winding roads, finally arriving at Palinuro which is on the Mediterranean and a popular resort area. It was incredibly busy and very crowded, so we headed back to the village after checking out the best place to come back to for a swim today. Sonia also showed me some very interesting ruins and a viaduct which was built by Mussolini before WW2, it is quite magnificent and is the only relic left with his personal crest on it. After his death every one of the crests was removed - this one was forgotten due to being too far south and quite isolated. It is quite something, a red brick structure with very high arches and quite ornate decoration. It is no longer in use but used to be for trains.
After lunch and a siesta we had a visit from Zio Ugo and 2 of Sonia's cousins visiting from New York. Their mother Zia Christina is quite ill. We then cooked dinner ( Italian pork and fennel sausages - yum, patates (sauted cubed potato with herbs) tomato salad and radicchio. Followed by cold watermelon and grapes. Early night for all, another great day.
