What a night. Gastro hit me at 2 am. So sick, always a worry when you are a solo traveller. I had relevant meds but unable to keep anything down till around 6 am so after a bit of rest got up and got on my way to Verona. Taxi to train, train to Verona then taxi to Palazzo Camozzini. Beautiful former palazzo in the back streets of Verona not far from Piazza Erbe. So after checking in straight to bed for a rest. I ventured out at around 7 pm to have a look around, Verona is an incredibly beautiful city and I remember it well from 1984. Had a very poor attempt at some dinner, just to get some food into me then went back and straight toned.
Next day was scheduled to spend the day in Venice and I felt a bit better. Arrived at Santa Lucia station and walked out to see the grand canal in front of me, as busy and beautiful as I remembered. I got a day ticket for capo retro (water bus) and set out on my tour of the city. So beautiful and the sun shining on the buildings added to their beauty. I walked around among tiny streets and alleys with thousands of other tourists but it didn't feel crowded at all. I found a nice gondolier and negotiated for a half hour ride. It was spectacular - we glided along tiny canals, under bridges, past the Doges palace and under the Bridge of Sighs as well as out into the main lagoon by St Marks which is part of the Adriatic Sea. The gondolier was very kind and made my solo ride very special talking about Venice and the history. Worth every cent for sure and lovely memory.
I had pizza for lunch - very thin and crispy and delicious. Nothing like the cardboard thick doughy pizza back home. Wandered about after lunch and found some amazing handbag shops, beautiful leather, so cheap so I bought 3 and could have bought more except for having to carry it - found a great rolling duffle bag so bought it to stow all my extras in. Back to Verona and there was an opera performance at the palazzo that night which I was invited to. It was the Marriage of Figaro which was just fantastic - full costume and very entertaining. The palazzo cat got in on the act and performed with the cast like a real pro. He got a great round of applause at the end. It was a most interesting day - another gem in my one woman whirlwind tour of Italy France and Greece. Found shutters on my room to shut out the streetlight that made the previous night very confusing as I wasn't sure if it was day or night.
