Today is a Sea Day, and what a great invention it is! If only everyone could have a few lazy days like this, the world would be a happier (if less productive) place! Mark got up early (of course) and went to have waffles and then brought me coffee and pastries for breakfast in bed. We did a little souvenir shopping in the on board emporium, and then spent much of the morning reading in comfortable chairs in the ship's coffee shop. Then we took ourselves to lunch and on to two "lectures". The first was about other cruises available in future years on Celebrity, and the other about the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. Now we're briefly back in our room and watching a travel show about Fiji on t.v. What will we do the rest of the day? Read. Have a four course gourmet dinner. You know. Just like a typical day at home, right? What's really great is that there is nothing to do but relax. I don't feel like I should be doing laundry or working on something. All I can do is hang out and read and chat with Mark. A perfect day!
We don't have as many character sketches of our fellow passengers this time, but there are a few recurring characters. There are two Spanish men who must be brothers or twins who look startlingly like Matt Thurber. There is a guy at the dining room table next to us who looks like the grandpa on Everybody Loves Raymond. There is a waiter we refer to as "hummingbird" because she's always zipping around. Our Maitre'd is kinda intense. We lost our waiter, Augusto, the day after we wrote about him last. We aren't sure why, but the new waiter, I Gede from Indonesia, assures us that Augusto is ok. IGede is also nice and Olga is very attentive and always keeps the water glasses filled and makes Mark her special hot chocolate every evening (she says the secret is adding chocolate sauce to the cocoa powder).
I suppose hot chocolate doesn't sound very appealing to all of you who are sweltering in the heat wave. It's even getting coverage on the BBC News over here.
Mark and I have an idea for a new sitcom on Lifetime channel: Old Biddy Elevator. The first episode is inspired by the elevator ride after our tendered port, which means a lot of people arrive at the ship at the same time and the elevators are exceptionally full. The dialogue then proceeds with multiple Old Biddies expressing irritation, anxiety and option-generation in the 30 second ride to their floor. Of course the rest of us have to listen to them and stare straight ahead so they don't suddenly turn on us and start an individualized weight restriction inquisition. OK, maybe we couldn't squeeze a 22 episode season out of this premise. Maybe it's destined to be a wildly successful SNL skit with the catch phrase "I can't believe they allow this!" to be the sarcastic refrain every time people try to blame some non-existent governing body for "allowing" something that isn't even vaguely dangerous. :-)
Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Tomorrow is our last port of call (Oslo), then another Sea Day and then we head home.

Vikas Puri Awesome! Put together a pilot, and I'll have my friend George Costanza pitch it to NBC. "The Ride" we'll call it. Seems you are enjoying a bunch of relaxation. Stopping in Oslo, are you? One of my friends is there at the Univ of Oslo studying for the summer, having left her hubby and kids behind in Denver. She is one day younger than me (much like I am one day younger than Heather - funny, eh?) I just chatted with her on FB, and said to myself - "hey, that Heather and Mark cruise is going on. Let's see what those crazy kids are up to." I shall read up on your other posts.
momt greetings from the "tropics of Minnesota"!!! I am catching up on THREE days of blogs - how did I miss so many??? Your trip continues to sound wonderful & we are very jealous of the temperatures over there. Can't wait to see all of your pictures. The blue-green glacial waters sound like Alaska, but I think the areas you're in are much more populated than what we saw. We are spending a very quiet 4th of July - went outside to water the flowers & hurried back in to cool off again. This is NOT fun!! Karen, Mike & the kids are at the annual family picnic at the farm - wonder how long they'll last?! So glad you got to meet Andy & Carol - who would think?! They are really nice people. Will call Ray & let him know you ran into each other! Will be interested to hear about Oslo. Glad you're enjoying your trip.
Fran I am amazed as I look at the map that comes with your blog. According to it you are in Roswell NM. Don't know how that happens. Crazy. OH that relaxing time is just so wonderful. I think you need to plan two of these trips a year. Wouldn't that be delightful. Travel is just the best. Love your messages and so looking forward to seeing you on Sat. It might be 86 degrees on Sat. Currently, it is not as hot as China but close. It really isn't as hot as China was.
ak Heat date 352.564, another HOT day. As i go outside to water the flowers, there is a iine at the bird bath of not only birds but squirrels, rabbits, chipmonks, spiders, ants etc. all tyring to push their way to the front of the line. Will they attack me as I get closer with the hose? Hmmm...should I fill the bird bath first or last? The pleading wild eyes of the animals win out and fearing for my life, the bird bath is filled first. The wildlife is happy:) Oh to be on a cruise, sitting on deck with a good book and the cool breeze of the ocean? rustling through my hair. I can almost feel it as I stand in front of the air conditioner. Sounds like you are having a great time... love the history. Enjoy your last days!
