Had some time in Florence this morning before my train, so decided to revisit another place that I loved the last time I was here - Santa Croce. Like most of Florence, it's another square, with another church on it, but for me, the one is a little bit special. It's where the Bonfire of the Vanities was centred in 1497, when a somewhat enthusiastic priest collected books, art etc and set them on fire. It's ok though, because the Florentines took exception to this and did the same to him a few months later.
Walking around the church and looking at who's buried there is like reading a who's who of the Renaissance. Michelangelo, Dante, Machiavelli and (my favourite) Galileo, are just some of those buried here. It's a little humbling realising the collective genius that's lying beneath your feet.
