I've only been here a few hours, but I can already tell I'm going to love it here! The people are bonkers, the traffic is bewilderingly scary, the food (and wine) are grand, and the history - it just takes your breath away. After unpacking, I left my hotel, literally a stones throw from the Vatican, and walked into central Rome. Over the Tiber, into Piazza Navonne where I stopped off for a steak and a jug(!) of wine, before going on to the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and ending up at the Spanish Steps. Everything is illuminated at night and it looks so beautiful. It's incredible to see so much history in so few miles! I also walked past the Italian Parliament building, and I was so tempted to ask one of the guards if old Berlusconi was about, but they were armed and scary-looking so I didn't bother!
