This was one of those days when we set out with a plan and then the flow took us elsewhere. Leaving Cowaramup we were heading for Albany about 5 hours drive with a stop on the way at the Valley of the Giants just outside Walpole about 4 hours drive.
The early shift went to plan. With me at the helm of Bunty's lovely car we passed through green countryside that could almost have been England if it were not for the Karri trees instead of oaks, kangaroos instead of deer and flocks of wild emu trailing in some cases quite newly hatched chicks.
As driver I had to keep my wits about me as every few hours there was a bend to negotiate and at least twice in 3 hours I had to actually turn left or right. My navigator was not much help with this complex route as he spent the morning engrossed in the drivers manual working out what every button and lever was for. After 3 hours we came to Pemberton, the first town on the journey so pulled in for a quick coffee stop. A small one street town it did not on the surface have much to offer but as we were here we popped onto the little museum and information centre. An exhibition on the amazing Karri forests and information about the Karri Forest Explorer Drive with stops for walking was so tempting we found ourselves booking in to the Pemberton Hotel. Half an hour later we were on the Explorers Trail and soon deep into the forest. First stop was the Gloucester tree a 60 meter tall Karri that is used as a fire lookout and can be climbed using a decidedly dodgy looking ladder by anyone that cares to take the risk. Not us today but several others were. Onwards through the Beedelup National Park and we set out on foot for a delightful walk through the mixed forest of Karri, marri and jarrah trees learning all about them and other flora from the helpful information boards along the way. We arrived back at our hotel before dusk as advised as this is "roo time" and does not make for very safe driving.
Tomorrow we head for Albany, well maybe....
Unfortunately I have been unable for some reason to load any photos onto this blog since I think Port Douglas. If you want to see them they should be on my face book page under iPhoto's well maybe....
