Today we went to Cape Leeuwin the most south westerly point in Australia. Just out from this wild and windy headland (rather like Cornwall) is one of the most dangerous places in the world for shipping. Cape Leeuwin is the place where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. As you might imagine there have been a lot of ship wrecks off these shores and where there is danger to shipping there is always a Lighthouse. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Australia's tallest, was built in 1895. Still operational it has a light that shines with the intensity of a million candles that can be seen from over 47 km away. From the very windy top we had wonderful views of the exact point where the 2 oceans meet but sadly today no whales that can often be spotted on their migration north at this time of year.
Our drive home took us through Boranup Forest full of the magnificent silvery barked karri trees. It has been quite a relief to be told with some assurance that there are no koalas to be seen in these parts now. Don't get me wrong, I would very much love to see another koala but at least now I can enjoy the views around me rather than missing everything as I am constantly looking up into the trees.
Nearer to home we thought we would pop into Woody Nook one of our local wineries for a bottle of red to go with our steak supper. There is also a restaurant attached to the "cellar door" where the tastings are offered. Being polite English folk we could not possibly turn down the offer of tasting 3 whites, a rose, 2 reds and a port. Denise the tasting lady is now our new best friend and we left with 3 bottles and a promise to cycle back for lunch in a few days time.
Eating at wineries is very popular around here with booking pretty much essential. Woody Nook is particularly popular and it also has a restaurant at Woodcote near Henley-on-Thames where it show cases all it's Margaret River wines to the UK. Apparently we are now eligible for a free glass of wine if we ever dine there. Sounds like a good plan for lunch one day on our return if we are getting Aussie withdrawal symptoms.
Talking of wine and good food I must just say what a wonderful time we had last evening with Bunty and Bruce's neighbours Di and Mike. They gave us such a warm welcome with a traditional Aussie BBQ and introducing us to several other couples too. Such a range of interesting folk including a wine maker and his wife who makes nougat big time, we had both and they were delicious.
We will definitely have to get the bikes out and increase our calorie output if our waistlines are going to survive all this good living unscathed.
