The bus from Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh city took about 6 hours but wasn't too bad. We found a guesthouse fairly near where we were dropped off and it was in the daytime which was a bonus!! Early on the 20th we got a mini-bus form vang vieng to vientiane and then a plane to hanoi! Hanoi turned out to be madness! we got conned on our first night, couldn't find anywhere to eat (and you can't cross the road).
