We checked out of the hotel in KL this morning, excited at the trip ahead. The drive to the airport was comfortable (Denny came to pick us up again). The flight to Langkawi was an hour long.
When we approached Langkawi, its natural beauty was wonderful to behold from the air. We looked down at the rainforests and beaches in awe. My lovely wife then asked me if there were any sharks that resided in Langkawi. I reassured her that there were none (I hope I'm right on that one). Shortly afterward, once that conversation ended, I looked over to my right to speak to my wife again. To my disbelief I saw her punching herself in the face.
Perplexed and somewhat amused I asked her what on Earth she was doing. She told me (I am not kidding here) that she wanted to test how strong her punches were in case she had to punch a shark in the face whilst in Langkawi. I can't even keep a straight face while I am typing several hours later.
The transfer to our hotel took around 30 minutes from the airport. We are currently nestled in the heart of a rainforest. I am listening to the sounds of crickets, frogs and other mysterious creatures. Earlier, I thought I saw some weird black smoke going through the forest making a clicking noise. If I see a polar bear here I'm making a run for it.
Truth be told, this is probably one of the most magical places I have ever seen. Wild monkeys are swinging through the trees, and there are apparently 300 species of bird hanging around the forest. I haven't seen one yet. I think they may have meant 300 birds.
If you imagine a cross between FernGully and Avatar (some would say they are the same thing anyway) then that is pretty much where we are staying. Our balcony is snuggled amongst vines and trees. We have been warned that some monkeys have become rather good at stealing things from people on their balconies, and that we should never keep a door open even for a moment (which makes using these portals rather difficult), lest these hairy thieves get their hands on our laptops. Apparently there is quite a market for American branded electronics in the rainforest.
We had dinner in a restaurant bundled in the midst of the forest. The food was not bad, but they had a rather different interpretation of the word "mild" when it came to spice. My throat can't handle too much more of this.
Tomorrow we hope to hire a car and be able to take ourselves around the Island for some exploration.
In my next blog I hope to go undercover into the rainforest, to try to buy some stolen merchandise from the animals.
P.S.
