We are now in Sydney, Australia!
We left Bangkok on Sunday night, not a moment too soon! Not long after I wrote the last blog, the protests got a bit crazy with the police intervening. Apparently there were a good few people killed and injured, though I only heard this from England! We knew something was up when the street sellers started running from Khaosan Road, and left nice and early to get to the airport. We were there 4 hours before check-in opened, a fun morning!
It's not quite as much a culture shock as expected, very odd to be able to understand everyone again. There's something to be said for the childlike ignorance that comes with being in a country completely unable to understand their native language. For someone who has always been scared of language barriers, I enjoyed Asia more than I thought.
In our first morning in Sydney we were incredibly tired, due to sleeping for about 30 mins on the plane thanks to the most hideously screaming baby I have ever encountered. Never has devil spawn been a more fitting term. Anyway, we got to wake up! hostel Sydney which is awesome and a bit of a home from home at the minute, then headed out to have a look at the city. We walked right up to the foot of the harbour bridge and opposite sydney opera house, which is actually pretty ugly looking in the daytime but an icon nonetheless!
Today we went for a surf lesson with mojo surfing. Some of our group were a lot better at it than others (Gaelle!). I didn't even manage to stand up! But it was a really fun experience, even though I used the surfboard as a body-board (or boogie board here!) for the whole time. We'll probably end up renting beginner surfboards somewhere else up the coast, I will stand up before I leave Australia! Tonight we are heading to the Opera Bar in the Opera House to have what I am sure will be a very expensive drink with a girl Gaelle knows who's studying in Sydney. Apparently the views are fantastic and it's definitely something that has to be done.
Liking Australia so far :) We are heading to Byron Bay tomorrow evening, it's a 12-hour bus journey so we will save a night of accomodation, woo! Australia is awesome but it is also expensive! Takes a bit of getting used to after Asia. Photos are still being uber-awkward but will try my best asap.
