We are now in Byron Bay after spending slightly longer than planned in Sydney!
We went to meet Gaelle's friend from uni at the Opera Bar, right outside the Opera House overlooking the harbour and Harbour Bridge. Absolutely stunning at nighttime, cities are so different at night. We had a good drink and chat, before walking home all through the city. We did a nice bit of walking in Sydney, easy to get exercise when on a very tight budget! Public transport everywhere? Pah, the legs will do fine, and they're free!
The next day we went on a walking tour with a big group from the hostel around some of Sydney's beaches. We started off with Coogie Beach, walking all around the cliffs for about a million miles before finally getting to Bondi. We all bought fish and chips and sat watching the surfers do some amazing dives off their boards. Sports are so much more entertaining when people fall off. Or maybe that's just me being mean. There were some amazing surfers on Bondi too, very impressive. In the evening we went down to the bar in the hostel and saw a live band for free! Gotta love hostels.
We decided to have a day extra in Sydney than planned, because we didn't have chance to fit everything in! So yesterday we visited all the green spaces the city has to offer, Hyde park and the botanical gardens, which were absolutely massive! We bought a picnic lunch from a deli which was absolutely packed with city workers in their suits (felt quite out of place in my khaki 'travelling trousers' and tshirt!) and ate it on the lawn of the botanical gardens, whilst some cockatoos got incredibly close to us! Australia has much more unusual birds than England, well apart from the seagulls which eyed up our chips the day before, but there's no escaping them. Yesterday we also went to the Harbour bridge, walking about halfway across it which gave an amazing view of the city and the crazy people who were doing the bridge walk right over the very, very top. Probably less crazy for the height of the thing and moreso for the price, it costs 200 quid! That's a lot of beer!
Yesterday evening we finally tore ourselves away from wake up hostel (highly recommended!!) and got a 12-hour greyhound coach to Byron, where we arrived at 10 this morning. We've had a nice chilled out day, working on our tans and playing in the sea. Time for a chilled out few days I think, because we've not had enough of them already! ;)
