We arrived in Mysore after a looong night bus. Pretty much got no sleep as it was an AC bus so I was pretty chilly! We only had this one day in Mysore due to Tom being unwell in Hampi. We'd booked a hotel already (by Tom, primarily as it was by a supermarket and McDonalds!) so we headed there and went to sleep for a few hours so we could make the most of the afternoon without being zombies!
McDonald's for lunch as Tom didn't want to go near any Indian food and then we headed off in search of the Maharaja's Palace which was all we really had time for.
We went around the palace which was very ornate and beautiful in parts inside. Lovely stained glass windows, carved wooden doors and ceiling panels, mosaic floors, colourful interiors and a beautiful ivory inlaid door. Apparently the door was presented at the Royal Albert Hall at some point and won the top award for the detailed inlay. Also interesting to note that when the palace was rebuilt and completed in 1912 (after a fire gutted the previous one), some of the ornate cast iron pillars in the building were actually cast in Scotland and imported. The new palace was actually built by an English architect. No piccies allowed inside unfortunately. As is quite often the case in museums you have to hand your camera in. I don't like doing this as I feel it's safer with me. Tried to keep it in my bag but they bloomin' scanned my bag and saw the camera and sent me away to hand my camera in aaaaaaall the way back at the palace entrance. HUFF! Caught me this time.
Headed back to the hotel and Tom was excited to check out the “supermarket” opposite. It was actually pretty close to what we would expect from a supermarket. The first one we have come across that had lots of fruit and veg as well as fridge stuff as well. Bought a few things for breakfast in the morning. The excitement honestly never ends! Next stop Wayanad!
