exciting news from today..... i have got myself a job!!!!! such a relief after having been the last of the 4 of us to get any decent job offers so i was feeling a bit panicked!! i start on monday and spending the whole of saturday night stuck on a train which isnt so fun. so i am working 10 mins away from a town called blackwater in central queensland so i will be able to go into town once or twice a week to use the internet cafe and also stock up on supplies which is always handy.. especially when you hear all these stories about people who are at least a 2 hour drive from the nearest town making a trip to the pub extremely hard work!!! the cattle station i will be working at is 40,000 acres and i will get the chance to muster cattle but also help to bring on young horses as they have a stud attached to the farm with 20-30 breeding mares so 80% of my time will be filled with horse work and riding which should be absolutely amazing. i also get my own house which i share with a french girl who i will be working with so it all sounds rather good!
i had the most amazing day today though beginning with the chance to help handle 3 1/2 month old foals involving catching them, teaching them to pick up their feet and then taking them for walks around the paddock, they were all really fiesty so i have major blisters on my hands from where i had to cling onto the rope whilst being dragged around a field. brilliant fun though, especially when they finally accepted what was happening and went from being completely wild to walking next to you quite happily.
after lunch we went for our first ride in oz through the trees which we had to canter through as fast as possible avoiding logs on the floor, trees, rocks and the million spider webs overhanging, it really was quite brutal and scary as anything when you were doing it... especially cantering downhill in a funny saddle avoiding trees as you went but the buzz when we had finished was brilliant! and i guess i will have to get used to it for when i start my new job as a jillaroo!
the second ride we got to do was to take the crazzyyyy expensive polo-cross horses out for their daily exercise of a 9km canter round a paddock. and i mean these horses would be worth well over $20,000 dollers it was unreal. i had a gorgeous gelding called smuggler who was easily the tallest horse they had. it was amazing riding this fantastic horse especially considering that justin (the owner and stables owner) had only seen us ride a little bit earlier that day!
all i can say is the quick dip in the pool was definately needed by the time we got back to springbrook as i am proud to say that i have my first tan line.. where my watch was so bring on the forearm and face tanning of the next 3 months!!
we are all absolutely exhausted now though and at 9pm i am the last person still up and thinking about heading to bed.. ready to be up bright and early to do it all again tomorrow. also i forgot to mention... I SAW MY FIRST KANGAROO =D gooooood times.
