soooo the last week has been action packed thats for sure. i have met some amazing people, travelled over 2500km, slept in a swag under the stars and eaten toasted marshmellows by the campfire.. now this is what its all about!!!
it all started on our 6 day tour starting in darwin and making our way down to the red centre where uluru is situated. so after an early start 17 of us backpackers set off on the 1600km journey by bus down to alice springs. this took us 3 days but it was totally worth it as each night we slept in tents and sat by the campfire drinking beer and taking vodka shots (apparantly its soem sort of polish drinking game according to the swiss guy =/) we also got to see some crazy stuff along the way such as the katherine gorge which was absolutely stunning, and the devils marbles which are beyond describing as they are round rocks sitting on top of each other and dont fall off, its crazy!!! good fun to climb on though as the many many pictures show!! we also went to a crraazzyyy outback pub in daly waters which i swear had underwear hanging up on the beams above the bar and money and pictures and photos and everything yu could possibly think of hanging up everywhere. it was truly crazy!! there was also a set of traffic lights outside which were permanently on red as a bit of a joke - them being the most remote traffic lights in oz- and apparantly people genuinally stop there and wait even though there is no traffic whatsoever, its brilliant. i also got the chance to feed a croc called sneaky sam at an animal rescure centre which belonged to a friend of jason (our guide) so i got to dangle some chicken in front of his nose of a stick to make him jump up a bit to eat it.. its good fun =) our whole group bonded during the long bus journeys so to pass the time we played games such as 'i went shopping with grandma' and charades and consequences where a brilliant story came about involving selina and martin! the 3 days were topped off by a wild night out in alice springs where we all partied hard despite the fact we had to be up again at 5am for the next part of the tour.
the following day our original group was split depending on what package we had bought so 17 went down to 4 of us. so there was me, marion, ramon and martin left to explore the red centre. first stop was a camel farm where we stroked a dingo, then onto camp for the first night. once lunched and ready to go we headed to kata tjuta which is a spectacular rock formation in the same national park as uluru. after climbing around there for a while we headed to uluru (ayers rock) to watch the sunset whilst drinking champagne. ( we sure know how to pick the best trips =D ) the most stnning thing was watching the rock change colour as the sun went down behind us as its goes through many different colour changes!! then it was back to camp where we hunted down the rest of our original group from all over the site (including our previous guide) and had a singalong by the campfire courtesy of andrew and his guitar!
the next day we were up crazily early as we had to be back at uluru again to watch the sunrise, it was freezing cold but worth it as once again we saw the colour changes of the rock. then it was time to walk around the base of the rock exploring the caves and mini water pools at the bottom (which i never expected to see there!!) before meeting up with an aboriginal women who spoke in the native language with help from an interpreter to tell us all about the rock and the properties of the different plants and then we sat inside a cave and listened to a story about the rock! it was fascinating! then, sad to leave, we said goodbye to uluru and began the long drive to kings canyon setting up camp in a mouse infested camp and cooking dinner on teh camp fire! hot chocolate and marshmellows were our choice that night as we listened to music before rolling out our swags and sleeping under the stars whilst praying that a mouse wouldnt run over you!! our final day brought the truly stunning kings canyon and unfortunately my pictures will never do it justice. we hiked up a huuugeeee hill to the top of the canyon and then walked around the rim taking in the views of the canyon and the different rock formations up at the top! it was long walk but worth it in every way as it really is a must see!!
finally our trip was over and it was back to alice springs for one last night together.
yesterday marion and i flew to perth whilst the rest of the group went elsewhere... although most are in cairns so i will see them next week!
so here we are in perth.. and it looks like its about to rain!! we are heading down to a backpacker shop in a moment to see what there is to see around here. so who knows what i will have to tell you next =) xxx
