Day 23 - Had a big breakfast then walked to the Capitol, a spectacular building. Walked right round it, took lots of photos then headed to the Air and Space museum. It has some pretty impressive memorabilia from Neil Armstrongs suit, nuclear missiles, sky lab space station to the spirit of St. Louis aeroplane. How the astronauts live in space is very interesting! We then walked to the shopping area to find an extra bag to fit everything in-which proved to be tricky. Everything is so spread out, couldn't really find the downtown of Washington. Anyway had a good look around and eventually found one. Think we were spoilt in New York and San Fran having shops on our doorstep. Caught a taxi to the Holocaust Museum. For the next three hours we were so engrossed. At all the museums you get bag and security checked, but this museum it was a bit tighter. Again, free and quite a modern newish museum. The first tribute we saw was to a black museum police guard who was shot protecting the public in 2009 by an anti Semite. It was so quiet and dimly lit -we started at the 4th floor and made our way down. We spent a long time in each floor, reading all the history, facts, examples of propaganda and lots of unseen footage of the war and camps. On one floor they had original bunks, carriages where the victims were taken to the camps in, and the clothing they wore. The room filled with thousands of shoes was haunting. There were photos of the shaven hair in bags to be sold. It's so hard to believe this could've happened. It was such a tasteful and respectful tribute- we were so glad we went. Walked home rather slowly, was dark and we hadn't eaten at all since breakfast. Picked up pizza and packed our bags for a 4am start tomorrow.
