Hi all, now in Sapa, mountains in the northern part of Vietnam. Here's what we've been up to since the last post.
Our highlight was definitely going to Ha Long Bay. We decided to splash out a little and go for a mid price cruise which was well worth the money especially as the budget cruises are known for having rats and poor hygiene conditions. We were well looked after with some amazing food, most noticeably were the vegetable carved flowers served with prawns. We had a great time on the boat soaking up the views of 100's of islands. We stopped off at a cave (known as surprising cave) which was MASSIVE and well worth the visit. It was also amazing to see the numerous floating villages, in fact one seemed to go on for miles and miles.
A highlight of the whole trip for me was kayaking in a lagoon just as it was getting dark. With my partner we managed to be the only ones. It was truly a surreal moment of peace listening to the sounds of wildlife high up in the mountains around us. After Ha Long Bay we overnight trained it to Sapa. We're both currently sat with numerous layers on including scarves while soaking up the views of the mountains and rice terraces. Sapa is well know for its minority hill tribes. The women and children wear the most beautiful batik dyed clothing with beading and jingles and big hoopie earings. Their handmade handicrafts are often hand embroidered and they carry either children or woven baskets on their backs while trying to sell you their goods. We found a lovely little shop with the most gorgeous embroidered products, we may have made a purchase or two.
As soon as we made our way north to Hanoi the temperature was noticeable cooler. In fact we've worn our jumpers frequently since then and we're very much enjoying the electric blankets not only at night but all times of day.
We're heading to China next, though not sure how much we'll be able to keep in touch. Phoning might be ok but fb and blog might be blocked. If so will update in around 3/4 weeks. Don't worry we haven't dropped off the face of the earth.
Love to all H x

Can you drop me an email (China permitting!) at helen.thomas(at)girlguiding.org.uk? Thanks and enjoy the rest of your trip!
Angela Newman I think your next job will be writing for a magazine, great reading.
