Part 1: Gemma, Mum and Dad (Goodbye Gareth)
Night Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Mumisode of the Day: "That chap's not in!" Mum's helpful comment while we were waiting our turn for the lift in our hotel.
Not the most exciting of days today. Pretty much the whole day was spent in transit between Madrid and Geneva. We had opted for the cheap flight which meant that we were to fly Madrid to Geneva via Frankfurt. A little discouraging to be sitting in the terminal and to see a flight to Geneva take off in front of you. We saved over 1000 Euros so we kept reminding ourselves of this.
Fairly unremarkable flights; the transit between terminals at Frankfurt took us pretty much the whole stop over. Completely forgot that we needed to get out Swiss francs at the airport and so got into a taxi with only euros. Fairly extreme exchange rate at the end of our journey and to make matters worse, we once again had landed in a town on a national holiday. This time the locals of Geneva were out re-enacting a war and so we couldn't get anywhere near our hotel.
After a short walk pulling the bags through the streets, we saw David's smiling face and we knew we were on the right track!
Part 2: Amber and David
Night Location: Geneva, Switzerland
For the first time, David and I decided to splurge 35 francs per person on our hotel breakfast so as to give us strength for the journey ahead. This took quite some time as we wanted to eat an appropriate portion so that breakfast was worthwhile!
David had purchased our train tickets yesterday so after checking out of our hotel we boarded our train bound for Geneva. The train journey was beautiful. Switzerland is perfect for the winter with its rolling green fields surrounded by jagged mountain peaks glistening with snow. The train hugged Lake Geneva and ultimately pulled into the central train station right on time!
The taxi ride to our hotel was relatively painless except for the bill of course. We checked in and very soon after left in search of a laundromat with two bags of washing to be done! This of course was an interesting experience as after finding the laundromat we spent some time decoding the symbols on the side of the washing machine so as to work out what to do! All went well, so we returned with our clothes 'fresh and clean.'
Song of the day: Better together - Jack Johnson
Hooray, the gang has been reunited once more and we are now on the count down for Christmas. After the initial song of the day, we are definitely better together. Amber played the Michael Buble Christmas album that she has bought in our absence. As we have been writing the blog, there weren't that many stories to tell but we told them anyway. Luckily we have been upgraded to a two-bedroom apartment and so we have a massive lounge room to sit around in.
We have discovered that Geneva is an extremely expensive city. Gone are the days of the 6 euro pizza. Margherita pizza tonight cost 17 francs! Geneva is also the home of clocks and watches and so there could be some watch purchases made here.
