Bali. 3 weeks of uninterrupted sunshine, good food, cheap drink, crazy socializing and surfing. It is almost enough to make you not want to leave this place….. So we have decided not to. In a moment of spontaneity we have rescheduled our flights so that we fly into NZ in three weeks time and have cut out Australia altogether.
Rubbish. As good as Bali is, we cannot miss the opportunity to see Aus as well. But the temptation is there, believe me.
So since the last half-hearted attempt at a blog (I had a beer in hand and the house music was calling, that is the only excuse I have!!) we have not really moved at all. Our plans, well Matt's, was to move around, see the Island, go to the Gili Islands and generally travel around. I was adamant even before we got here that we weren't going to be doing any of that and as it turns out, I was right. Once you settle in to the Bali pace of life, there is no moving required. Cold beers are never more than 10feet away, sunshine bears down on all sides and people just don't, do, anything, around here.
Our days have consisted of getting up, as and when, have breaky, as and when, heading to the beach, as and when, and then surfing. It is not a tough life let me assure you!! Not that in three weeks either of us a particularly good at surfing but we have tried, loved it and at least got a little better!! O lets not forget the evening regime of eating, as and when, having a few beers and the hitting the Bali nightlife, which like most holiday destinations is a revolving door of beautiful women, drunk Englishmen and crazy dancing Germans. One revelation however, is that Swedes have a similar, lets just jump up and down, style of dancing!!
So what have we done? Well, after our surf lessons, three days of intensive (on a Bali level) surfing, with pretty much one to one tuition, we spent two days recovering from the board rash, bumps, bruises and cuts on the beach, before hiring a board, a bike and then taking on more waves. Are you starting to see what a tough life we have lived for the last three weeks??
On one afternoon, whilst Matt was watching the Rugby, I went over to the 'Waterbomb' Park, which was recommended to me by many a person. It turns out, that despite (or maybe because??) of the safety precautions being slightly lax, the park is awesome fun!! In an instant you are whisked back into the mindset of a ten year old, and you're running around the park, arms in the air, screaming 'more!!' The park is set just off the beach a little further down from where we are staying and consists of about 15 slides all of varying speeds, descriptions and 'thrill' level. One in particular worth mentioning, and there will be pictures to follow, starts with two people in a double ring inflatable, thrown down a tub run before dropping almost vertically down, followed by an almost sheer wall. Now you go up the wall facing forward, and for the heavier party, get particularly close to the top, (so much so on one run I was pretty sure I could have plucked the feathers of the little bird sitting on the top,) before falling down backwards a being launched into a pool of water surrounded by spectators, where, more often that not, you get flipped over and any women on the ride lose the top half of their bikini. I bet you were wondering why there were spectators at this particular point…It wasn't just the fact it was a very lovely sun trap!
On one ride, a shoot, myself and a kiwi nearly took off over the side about 30feet up, but for the sake of the mother's sanity, I won't go into it!!
Despite us both getting 'the Bali belly' at some stage, it hasn't held us back at all. We have met some amazing people, some who just follow the surf around the world, some doing similar journeys to ours, some longer and some holiday makers. All in all, Bali represents a break from everything that is life. If you want to sit in a bar and watch the sunset you can, if you want to chill out by a pool, you can, if you want to take it up a few notches at any time you can. We have done it all and nothing in three weeks. That pretty much sums up how Bali can be.
We have done it all and nothing.
Next stop Aus xxx
