Again, there has been a wee absence on the Blog front but when you are in Aus, there are better things to do than sit in front of a computer....despite it being bitterly cold, generally overcast with the odd spot of rain...!
Still, Cairns was a bit of a suprise package for us. Initially, much like Hong Kong, we thought it was just a stop over, a starting point if you like, but it turns out that Cairns has more to offer than an airport and a woolworths. Firstly, it is still warm, sunny and dry at this time of year! Thankfully. It is also quite a pretty place. Despite being built on a grid, so all roads are straight (which has its benefits after a few beers~!!) it has a sort of homely vibe! Everyone we met had planned to stay a few days but ended up getting a job and staying longer. It is not as if the nighlife is bouncing off the walls and there are loads of things to do, but the pace of life is such that you can sit in the park, by the ocean on a saturday afternoon, listen to live music and bask in the sunshine.
We spent a few days in cairns and settled in to the aussy lifestyle quite nicely. On the first day like I mentioned we just sat in the park and relaxed. The second day, Matt was up bright and early and headed off to the Great barrier reef. I will let him tell you about this so watch out for an additional piece on the bottom of my ramblings! The same day, I spent playing in a football tournament between the Hostels of cairns. The pitch was a 5-a-side pitch with inflatable walls and goals! genius, and great fun. Despite most people taking it very seriously, our team of 99% english talent, went for a more laisez faire attitude, you know, bare feet, beers, showmanship etc etc. It was refelected in our played 6 lost 5 record but fun was had none the less!! That evening we watched a particularly mondain (spelling?!!?!?!?) charity shield in an Irish bar, kick off.....midnight!
The monday night brought Monday madness. I havent mentioned the name of our hostel yet, I think subconsiouly I have blacked it out, but at the 'Asylum' yes 'asylum' monday nights are the big party night and the whole hostel heads out, in branded shirts and wrecks Cairns. Fun. Very fun. After lots and lots of goon (cheap aussy wine) then a whole night on the town, we got up at 630am and jumped on a bus to Airlie Beach.
We have since, sailed the Whitsundays and taken on the 'Roads' of Fraiser Island in a 4x4. It has been a tremedous week and we will probably put pictures and a blog up after we have been to Australi zoo tommorrow.
Hope all is well xx
