After driving along the plains for so long the sight of the Rockies in front of us was very welcome and spectacular , especially with the peaks still having snow on them. Banff was once an alpine ski town built for wealthy victorians staying at the Chateau. Nowadays mass tourism has overrun the place as the town is within the national park. However, the town itself is very picturesque with a stunning view right along the main street to the mountains that surround it. Banff National Park is a hikers dream and hiking is the main focus of many a travellers visit to the area in summer. The scenery is stunning wherever you walk whether it be close to town along the crystal clear river or higher up in the mountains.
Accommodation in July and August is at a premium as is camping and we have never before, anywhere, even in Europe in August, seen so many motorhomes, the vast majority being hire vehicles leased by Europeans mostly German speaking ones. The campsite though is in a wonderful setting just below the snow capped Tunnel Mountain and whilst busy still managed to be relaxing and peaceful For people who enjoy camping what can be better, warm evening, beautiful views.
