Next we drove the Sawtooth Scenic Byway with beautiful mountains all around. At one point the road was a long downhill so Dave hopped on his bike and rode behind for about 7 miles. We made a picture stop, got back in the car and the engine wouldn't start! Dave was checking things out and was about to do some serious diagnostic work when the car started right up. I think it was just getting really tired and needed a break for a bit. Those hills are tough on our Yotabago.
We came out of the mountains past Sun Valley and then entering Hailey we saw lots of people standing around and yellow ribbons tied to everything. All of a sudden cops and fire trucks drove by sirens blasting followed by a huge motorcycle parade. Random and fun.
From there we headed to Craters of the Moon NP which is a huge lava field in the middle of nowhere. We rode our bikes around the 7-mile loop and enjoyed the scenery. We stopped part way around and with the aid of our headlamps explored some lava caves.
It was starting to get dark so we decided to drive a bit further. Our gas tank was running low so Atomic City looked like a good destination. Unfortunately the turn- off was a dirt road so in confusion we went a little further and pulled off the road to crash for the night. In the morning after a warm shower in the RV we were headed for the nearest gas station. A second dirt-road turn-off for Atomic City had a huge sign saying they had No Gas. My phone found the nearest gas station I'm Moreland so we drove there in a minor state of panic. But we just barely made it. Filled up 14.992 gallons for what I think is a 15 gallon tank - close one! The lady at the gas station was so excited we went there and was thrilled the Internet registered her family-owned, one-pump, repair shop and gas station. She was so cute and refused to let us fill up our own gas. Little did she know that drives Dave nuts.
Just passed through Idaho Falls on our way to Jackson WY.
On a sad note, we came to the realization last night that we're not getting as far as we expected each night and at the rate we're going and our current location we'd be going non-stop for the rest of the week to even be able to make it to MN for my cousin's wedding so I had to cancel on it. I was pretty sad about it, but this way we will be able to stop and enjoy the sites we're driving by. Looks like we'll be cutting Minnesota, Iowa and probably South Dakota and Nebraska out of our route. But there's lots to see in Wyoming and Colorado.
