Today we went to see the Casa Mila Apartments, and the Sagrada Familia. The apartments were based on aquatics, they were so dramatic and over the top. The Sagrada Familia is a cathedral in the middle of the city that is huge. It isn't even finished and won't be for many years. We wanted to go to the top of one of the towers and decided that we didn't want to pay the 2e to ride the elevator, but there were no stairs. We went up in the elevator and I am so glad we couldn't find stairs! I would have been huffing and puffing by the time I got to the top. We took the stairs down… they were super narrow and circular. It was a very interesting cathedral.. It actually looked kind of like a sand drip castle.
After the Sagrada Familia I went with Kyle to buy a Spanish guitar. It was really cool watching him pick it out, because they keep bringing different ones for him to try out. They all sounded so different because of the type of wood used and the style. It made me want to learn how to play my guitar even more! I AM taking lessons in the fall.
Tonight we went to Hard Rock Café for dinner… I don't think I have ever been happier to see a hamburger and french fries! It was absolutely wonderful! It was really funny to go there because there were no Spanish people there. It is really humorous to see how dramatically different our two cultures are. In all the little Spanish restaurants only about 15 people could be there at one time, but at Hard Rock they could hold at last a couple hundred. Spanish restaurants usually had music playing so quietly that you could barely hear it, but Hard Rock's music was so loud that you had to scream over it to hear each other. Spanish restaurants wait 6 and a half years to bring you your check and they refused to do separate checks, but at Hard Rock they brought it over pretty quickly and were more than willing to do separate checks for a party of 15. Spanish portions are really small in comparison to Hard Rock/American, which obviously explains why our culture is so fat. I really enjoyed the experience of eating in little Spanish restaurants, even if I was not a huge fan of all the food. I'm very glad we went to Hard Rock, not only because it was the first time I was full in a week, but also because it was really interesting to be able to compare our cultures and make such drastic observations.
Today was our lat day in Spain, I am really sad to be leaving. I didn't think I would like Spain as much as I did. Madrid was great, but Barcelona was amazing. I was really impressed, especially since I had no idea what to expect. Of Madrid and Barcelona, Barcelona is by far my favorite. This whole trip (I say that like I have been gone for a month, because that is what it feels like, but really it has only been a week) we have been walking like crazy. I had gotten used to the fact that it will usually be a 30 minute walk to everything. I have really enjoyed that. At least I am exercising to make up for the ridiculous amount of ice cream I have been eating (I had ice cream 3 different times today!)
I'm excited about Italy!!
