Day 82
Today's drive is on US Highway 2 along the southern and eastern border of Glacier National Park, continuing east on 2 through the Rockies and northern Montana.
The forests were predominantly Western Larch, Lodgepole Pine, Spruce, Fir, with a few Aspen and Cottonwood scattered about. Colors were just beginning to turn.
The road through Lewis and Clark National Forest was red colored pavement. We crossed the Continental Divide at Maria's Pass, 5,280 feet.
Drove through the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, through the Northern Plains, past rugged ranchlands (sheep, cattle, horses) rolling on and on.
Stopped to tour the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana. Great museum with quality displays of Indian clothing, horse gear, weapons, household articles, baby carriers, toys and arts from the early 1900s. Colorful, decorative, beadwork on most items.
Stopped for gas in Chester, Montana and it was so windy that when I opened the car door, my map flew out of the car and kept going as I chased it down. I finally got it by running after it and stepping on it after it blew about 50 feet. I gave the gas station guy a laugh watching that. We asked him where we could get lunch in town and he recommended Spuds Cafe.
When we walked into Spuds Cafe EVERY head turned to look at us. Conversations stopped, raised forks were suspended in midair and mouths were opened as all the locals gawked at the "outsiders ". It was so weird. Michael said it reminded him of a time in the early 70s when he was a long-haired hippie and he walked into a restaurant in Buffalo, Wyoming, haha! Anyway, we sat down in a booth, and received friendly service and good food, but at times, we caught people turning to get a look at us. I guess they don't get many strangers in Chester.
As we continued east on US Highway 2, we could see the Bears Paw Mountains to the south, across the vast plains.
Also, all along our trip today, we saw quite a few trains running. Freight trains as well as Amtrak.
Stopped for the night in Glasgow, MT. Decided to take a break from camping and stay at Cottonwood Inn and Suites. Nice.
