Day 6
Another early (6:15am) start, yay, we are getting good! And for those of you wondering, we were treated to loud train whistle blasts at 1:30am, 3:00am and upon waking at 5:00am . . .
Continued on I-90 into Montana which is amazingly spectacular -green hills expand forever, dotted with cattle, horses & rolled bales of hay. Wolf Mountains in the distance are dark silhouettes brightened with a glow from the early morning sun. It is 56 degrees out, we are on our way again and life is good.
Drove through Crow & Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations, stopped at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. This monument spoke to us emotionally, making us think about how people fight & die to preserve their way of life.
Back on I-90, we drove by Billings, finally getting off I-90, onto State Hwy 3, passing by more vast expanses of land, grain fields, goats, sheep, horses, beehive boxes, boulders, tumbleweed, rolled hay bales, ponderosa pines, willows, cottonwood, grazing cattle, ranches & a few tiny towns every so often. We appreciate why this is called big sky country. In the distance we can see the majestic snowcapped mountains in Lewis & Clark National Forest.
On our drive today, we began to see these cool tall barn structures, that we learned are grain elevators. These towers rise up like elegant sculptors on the landscape. Check out the photo we posted.
At Great Falls, we headed north on I-15, west on 44, towards the northern Rockies, then north on US-89 to St. Mary, MT, the eastern gate to Glacier National Park. We have especially fond memories of GNP because 6 years ago that is where we spent our honeymoon - Awwwww
Our campsite at Johnson's of St. Mary RV Park was high on a hill overlooking Lake St. Mary in GNP. We had dinner in the camp cafe, talked with some fellow campers, then went to bed. Our bed is so comfortable; we are truly loving camping life in our Palomino Gazelle Ultra Lite. Outside temp was in the 40s, so we gave the air-conditioner a rest & slept with the windows open, enjoying the fresh mountain air.
