Day 13
We left Hazelton, BC at 9:00am, (64 degrees out) to complete our last driving leg of the journey for awhile. We are bound for the coast today, heading to Prince Rupert where we will spend 3 nights, then on Tuesday we begin the Alaskan Marine Highway (Ferry) part of our trip. It is amazing to think that we have driven across North America from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
Highlights from today's drive: Skeena River - a long, wide, rapidly flowing teal colored river with gray/white, round, smooth stones along the bank
Seven Sisters Mountains, jagged peaks, topped with snow, ringed with white puffy clouds
Lakes, dotted with water lilies, forests, wild lands, purple, yellow & white wild flowers, giant ferns, Indian reservations, winding, curvy roads, Canadian National Railways tracks, glaciers, snowfields, mountains surrounding us, the Skeena River to the right of us, flowing all the way to the Pacific Ocean
We stopped in Terrace at Bear Country Restaurant for a late breakfast- delicious - Michael had the "Big Grizzly".
Interesting: What we call Gas Station, Canadians call "Gas Bar".
Arrived in Prince Rupert around 3:30pm, set up camp, then drove into town. Checked out the Visitors Center, then walked around the shops at Cow Bay which is a waterfront area of historic buildings -shops & restaurants. It is named Cow Bay because when the first cows were brought to PR, in 1906, there was no dock built, so they swam ashore and where they landed became known as Cow Bay. While there, we had beers & appetizers & salads (beautiful organic greens, strawberries, blueberries & pecans with champagne vinaigrette) at Breakers Pub, overlooking the bay, watching fishermen clean their catches. We enjoyed as well, watching a couple of harbor seals swimming in the bay.
Then we drove around the town, through some neighborhoods that sit high on hills overlooking the bay, to see what the homes are like, saw several totem poles in parks around town.
