Well good morning bl*ggers!
Today at breakfast I arranged to meet Christian from Chile.
(We were on the same coach from Merced.)
He introduced me to Balet who is from Tenerife and was driving into the park so we all decided to share a lift to go in together.
But first it was time for brekky. I had the pancakes, Yuck.
Looked like a huge Jersey cow had laid a fresh one right on my plate.
Tasted like I was chewing a car matt but I chomped half of it for the energy.
So I'd just poured myself another coffee, still in a 7:30am daze, to hear "Hello old bean, spiffingly good weather don't you say.. So you're from England too?"
> Enter Jim from England >
Turns out Jimbo has been travelling the states for about a month and over a stiff coffee I find out he's an illustrator so we have some common ground.
FFWD >> 30mins and we're all in Balets car making our way up to the Sentinel dome hike.
It's a 2hr drive and as we climb in altitude the temperature start to plummet and snow starts to appear on the mahusive trees.
Taft point, near sentinel dome, climbs to around 7200ft and boasts some stunning views across the park...
(That's what the small print said anyway)
My inventory for the day:
A snickers bar, a bottle of water, a fully charged camera, a first aid kit (gay), a head torch, an extra pair of socks, a jumper, 2 AA batteries and nothing more than the hope of spending a day with some cool people and to get a few snaps of the shrubbery.
Well... What happened next over the proceeding 6hours, 13ish minutes and 13 seconds(ish) is what dreams are made of or even babies if that sort of thing floats your boat. ;)
Half Dome dominates the skyline.
Towering at over 8000ft, it's incredibly difficult to describe the view without actually being there.
You can see Yosemite all day in pictures but until the information of what you are seeing hits your retinas and your brain realises what it is you're seeing it's pretty hard to process. The scale and sheer beauty of what you are witnessing is remarkably mind boggling.
Glacier point is a popular viewing place. Loads of tourists trigger happy with their SLR's and we hadn't even started our trek yet.
It was hard finding the start (no maps allowed) but when we did, wow!
There were photo opportunities around every corner. The sun gleaming through the towering trees and reflecting off the snow drawing my attention to every detail that Yosemite had dished up on this feast of national park lunch.
We hiked for about 2hrs and made it to Taft point.
Taft point is a huge granite rock that struts out over the valley. Apart from soiling my pants making my way up to the tiny fence that stands between you and a 7000ft drop, the feeling was pretty overwhelming. I was sh*t scared if you've got 5 minutes it's worth a google.
Today we're off to see the giant sequoia trees...
