Touch down!!!! Best day yet.
Today was pretty special. I Got up early and went to brekky and Antii (the Finnish guy) was there. We ended up chatting and decided to head over to check out the University of California's Campus at Berkeley.
A few blocks walk and we were on the tube (Bart) heading out under the Oakland bridge to the campus.
As soon as you get off the tube you get the vibe that the town is a university town and it didn't take long to discover why. Literally the whole place is the university. Period.
Students everywhere. Every other
T-shirt being a "Cal" T-shirt that they wear to support their team(s). I don't think I've seen a place more proud to be associated with the university.
The most consistently branded university on the planet.
T-Shirts, caps, jumpers, buildings, roadsigns, buses, banners, shop windows. Excessively OTT but in some ways inspiring at the same time.
After a Starbucks and a chat about Antis full time job as a poker player back in Finland,we headed into campus.
White towering pillars, Olympia styled windows and a very large overly patronising door... We'd found the library. Impressive.
I stopped and chatted to a Chinese student on the grass doing an oil painting of the autumn trees.
Hmm Keep on painting..
About 3 days later we'd finally found the biggest football stadium (for a university) I've ever seen.
The home of the Berkeley Golden Bears football team and I was about to do something remarkable.
>>FFWD 10 minutes >>
and I was invited down onto the pitch to kick my first touchdown!
AWESOME (in an American accent)
So the story how I made it down there is a funny one.
Two hippies were inside and one of them asked us if we'd seen the crack...
Have I seen your crack?
Erm.. No thanks mate we don't do that sort of thing in England!
(I thought)
He points up to behind the top seats and showed us the big crack in the stadium wall. The crack runs right the way across the stadium to the other side. "It cost millions" he said and then proceeded to tell us all about the fault line below the stadium. He was totally stoned but a surprisingly intelligent and switched on guy reminding me to never judge a book by its cover.
I so anyways In conversation I happened to mention that I'd love to go down onto the pitch and hoof their American balls... Haha
Before I'd had a chance to say I was joking he shouts down;
"HEY GUYS, THIS GUYS FROM ENGLAND AND WANTS TO COME KICK YOUR BALLS!"
Funny as anything so I find myself down on the touch line kicking an American NFL ball.
So funny and an awesome day.
Tonight i'm going to chill as I've been feeling pretty rough. Might be getting a cold :(
GO BEARS!!
