well just got back to deejai after my 2 night jungle trek!! unfortunately the night before the trek there happened to be a BBQ and night out and no-one staying at deejai when there's a BBQ is left out,not good for me when I'm getting picked up at 9:30 but eh I'm a northerner, how hard can a drinking session and a 6 hour hike in 100% humidity be......actually pretty hard! the BBQ was awesome, food was so good and the booze was flowing, everyone getting on,was good to see so many different people from different places with different stories all getting on, even me and the 5 southerners, before we left for a bar we all lit lanterns which was really cool and headed to taku,a nice little bar that seems to stay open just for the deejai crowd,a group of Chileans took over as the evenings entertainment and were really good, turns out they are a travelling band....who knew as they had kept to themselves most of the time!got back to my room about 5am and it felt like as soon as I closed my eyes my alarm went off, nevermind! I think the Thai trek guy could see how good a night I had as he passed me what I thought was red bull but it was sangsom(Thai rum) and red bull, it worked and I was good to go!the group all assembled at a town about an hour out of chiang mai city where we had pad thai, well I didn't as it was turning my stomach!soon realised though I was the only English speaking person, the other 12 in the group were French,German and Spanish and I had no idea what anyone was talking about, made me wish I had listened abit more at school!anyway the trek started and I had soon sweated out the booze as straight out the door it was up,we climbed for what seemed like hours and actually was hours!stopped at a cave high in the hills full of bats, was nice to get in the shade as its not rained here for months so the jungle isn't really jungle,it's so dry and the Thai people set fire to the farm land and random trees but I don't really know why!after another really long walk through more jungle and miles and miles of farmland we got to our bamboo hut for the night and the Trekkers made us an awesome Thai green curry, had a good laugh with 2 French girls who had really good English and was pleased to make a couple of friends,we lit a fire and all sat round and had some "hong thong" another type of Thai rum that helped take the edge off!had an amazing nights sleep on a mattress on the floor with a mosquito net over the top, basic but comfy after the days trek except for being woken up early by the roosters in the morning, had my knife in hand ready to kill the b******s! day 2 and we took a 1 hour trek to an elephant riding place in a clearing in the jungle, was a good place to do it,we was the only group there and the fact we trekked in and would be trekking back out made it seem less touristy!i was sat on the elephants head and the 2 French girls on the seat on its back, our elephant was so stubborn, all it wanted to do was eat and drink out the river, was good fun trying not to fall off though!the mahout was an old guy who kept climbing onto everyone's elephants to gee them up abit,he stank of whiskey and said this had been his job for 30 years and he lived in the jungle,he was happy with his life aslong as he had whiskey I think!after the ride we trekked back up into the jungle and at a fork in the path the group split, only 3 of us did the 2nd night so after swapping details with everyone for photos and keeping in touch me and 2 French guys who could barely speak English went off deeper into the jungle, about an hour later our guide stopped and lit a fire, made a kettle,4 cups and chop sticks out of bamboo (had to be seen to be believed) and we had dinner, egg noodles with jasmine tea!some more trekking was done and we got to a waterfall, dived straight in and it was freezing but felt so good!after we trekked again to a bamboo hut a family lived in but was unable to stay due to another group already staying there, another hours walked and we stopped in a village where 7/8 families lived, was treated to a local meal of potato soup and rock pool crabs and fish, nothing done to them, just wrapped whole in a banana leaf with chilli and garlic and cooked on an open fire, absolutely amazing!sat outside after translating Thai English to an English the French could just about understand and back again I was ready for bed!day 3 started with rice and chillis for breakfast and we trekked down to another waterfall for a morning dip,the water was a bit warmer and spent about half an hour jumping in and swimming about!we spent the day trekking out of the jungle along dusty roads but barely saw any cars, lots of cabbages, they like there cabbage in Thailand!we trekked about 2 hours to a little place we had dinner at and were supposed to be getting picked up,didn't happen!another 2 hour trek through a town and papaya farms that we ate most of we got to a small village shop just down the road from where we started, about 15 mins later we got picked up by a truck with some people who got drove to the waterfall, pussies!the truck took us to the river where we got on a bamboo raft to take us downstream, was really slow due to it being the dry season and I nodded off a few times, the excitement came when the bamboo raft grounded out and just about everyone fell off,I was sat at the back and the bamboo raft guy came flying over my head,it was well and truly stuck!a few of us helped the 2 Thai guys get it unstuck and drag it back into the water and everyone nervously got back on,the rest went smoothly and at the end we climbed back into the truck with a funny story to tell and a few bruises.....back to deejai and a private room with a double bed please
